7ZZAAL: The Learning ManagerWithin the context of a rapidly changing work and life environment and with the recognition of the value of lifelong learning, management development can no longer rely on old developmental models, solely based on knowledge skills. Although these aspects remain a fundamental part of teaching, learningand assessment, more emphasis needs to be placed on personal development, promoting and supporting critical reflection and fostering autonomous learners. Evidence suggests that development of confidence in learning helps to develop self-regulation.Professional and aspiring managers need to take time and be given support to critically reflect on their own levels of personal effectiveness and to consider ways of more effectively managing both themselves and others. An extended learning experience, or residential form an integral component of the module as an opportunity to work closely with tutors and others in an experiential learning environment. This module provides an understanding and appreciation of the factors that influence learning, self-management and personal development, in addition to exploring issues in managing other people. Within this area, key themes will be effective management styles, motivation, team-working, interpersonal and communication skills, managing change and dealing with conflict. Assessment is by coursework.
